Notes from Tuibu Hall: The Culture and Craftsmanship of Yixing Zisha Teapots

In Yixing, a land steeped in ceramic culture, the Zisha (purple clay) teapot is more than just a tool for daily tea drinking; it is a work of art that carries traditional Chinese culture and philosophy. From the selection of raw clay to the shaping of the body, and from the intricate carvings to the precision of the firing, every step embodies the exquisite and profound craftsmanship of Yixing Zisha. Notably, the unique "breathable yet waterproof" characteristic of Zisha clay perfectly combines utility with aesthetics, showcasing a unique art of living and aesthetic taste.

【The Craftsmanship of Zisha Teapots】

Yixing Zisha teapots are primarily formed by hand. Taking the teapot as an example, the molding process consists of two main methods: "Pounding the Body" (Da Shen Tong) and "Slab Jointing" (Pian Jie Fa).

The so-called "Pounding the Body" refers to the manual beating of the teapot's main body, which is typically circular. Every craftsman is equipped with a "clay bench." They place the well-kneaded Zisha clay with the proper moisture level on the bench and use a wooden mallet (Dazi) to beat the clay into thin strips. Using a specialized compass tool (Juche), they cut out clay slabs of the appropriate length for the body, as well as circular pieces for the lid and the base.

The body slab is rolled into a cylinder, and then a paddle is used to slowly beat and shape it, causing the "belly" of the teapot to expand. The top and bottom are then drawn inward to form the mouth and the base. After drying slightly, the handle, spout, and lid are attached. Finally, a tool called a "Mingzhen" (a horn spatula) is used repeatedly to scrape, press, and refine the surface, meticulously creating a perfect work of art that fulfills the original creative vision.
